too many people with too much time on there hands it is time camberwell was spruced up look at the positive side of it and more people to spend local maybe a good time to have a big clean up of all the shops burke road looks so gray drab dreary

Agree with sprucing up the shops but that does not mean we need towers in our area and that is what the Brumby government is hell bent on doing to us.

Does anyone know what is going on at 498 Burke Road? This is a property on the corner of Burke Rd and Cochran Avenue. The original property was demolished and a large hole was dug, deep enough for about 3 floors. Recently a wall has been put up on the Burke Road frontage and some graffiti has gone up with 1 saying the words "Shame". Local residents have mentioned seeing a number of bikie characters hanging around the development site. This is very concerning as there has been some major development going on at this site and a number of things seem suspicious. Does anyone in BRAG have any information on this site?

There is an unconfirmed rumour that the development at 498 Burke Rd is going to be a brothel. If you are concerned, have a chat with the local police.

Any one who uses Bikies as security has to be

suspect

Merry Christmas to the BRAG management and committee, your hard work is appreciated

I'll be very surprised if a brothel appeared in a Residential Zone 1 area of Camberwell. However it is a little suspect that bikie looking characters are hanging around the site. An alternative possibility is that this development is going to be outside the norm of a large single dwelling home and as a result it has had a hard time fighting local residential 'anti-development' groups (possible ones from the Sunnyside estate?). Perhaps due to this, the owner of the site has had to resort to some 'security'... In any case, its very unlikely that there will be a brothel there, at least not openly... More likely, multi-residential development or at worst, a bikie hangout?? Perhaps this question is better solved with someone with hard evidence commenting on this question. Does anyone have documents around the council planning permit for this site?

There is some new graffiti on the front wall of 498 Burke. One refers to the Sunnyside 'committee' and the other says "F**k the local police". Something is going on at this site... its looking more and more suspicious

Anonymous said...

Where can we find the permit documents? The objectionable graffiti has been removed and again "security" is at the site. Just what is being built? Are we able to get a plan of the dwelling??? Boroondara is now certainly "pro development" which is not what the majority of the residents want.

The development at 498 Burke Rd is being dealt with by PR Building Surveyors. The building surveyor's name is Phillip Wood, tel 9803 1400.

The development is a single residence.

Single Dwelling? So why did the Sunnyside Committee try to block the development of this site? Is there something they know that we don't?

Anonymous said...

Who is the Sunnyside Committee ???

A letter was placed in every letter box of residents living on Cochrane Avenue regarding 498 Burke. Unfortunately there isn't a contact number/email that we can get in touch with these people directly to ask questions about the bikie characters hanging around the site etc...

BRAG members may be interested in the current representation review being conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission.

I've discovered a blog that is very informative on the subject, and I have made a contribution to the blog opposing Council policy.

Boroondara Council supports single councillor wards. This means the continual election of very conservative councillors.

Read www.boroondaravotereform.blogspot.com which I only found out about as it was mentioned on another blog.

I puts the case for reform very well.

The VEC intention is to change the current ward sizes to a less number of much larger wards with 3 or 4 Councillors to each ward.
This will lead to one Councillor offloading responsibility to another in his ward and it could also lead to ward stacking by a political party at elections.

Leave it as it is.

Do you people have any idea how hard it is to find somewhere to live in this city. I can't believe you're so obsessed over a station that's hideous with overhead wires everywhere when people are struggling to find places to live.

I grew up in Boroondara, I know you like the area, but get some perspective. Go out and try to find somewhere to rent on a student budget and you'll see things differently. It's rather different to owning a house in a posh part of town.

Get a grip, stop being so reactionary, accept that suburbs change and make a positive contribution to the planning process.

If you want to live in one of the most expensive suburbs you will have to do more than bleat about it.
Save up, and maybe one day you will make it.

What the residents want is to beautify the station precinct with a low scale community development set in an open public plaza.

What the residents don't want is s opportunistic residential, retail and commercial development over the station.

You are right. It is expensive here. Many of us living here could not afford to buy here now. Not our fault the price has gone sky high. It is you who want to move in who push the price higher. You want to move in because it is nice and it is nice because we have tried to keep it nice. What makes you think that something built at the station would be cheap. The studio apartments in Burke Avenue sosled for $500,000 - $700,000. So take what you can afford.

Hi all, I am not sure if I am addressing the correct people, but I am a resident in Boroondara who recently suffered unpleasant dealings with the council and my neighbour regarding a building permit.

In short, my neighbour is removing around 15 significant trees on his property, building a luxurious house, right up to 10cm from our fence. A fence which I look out from my family room, where my children play and destroying the beautiful greenary that is Camberwell.

Objections to council yielded a meeting with our neighbour, who showed us ammended plans which we found to be agreeable, but on lodgement they put in the original plans, and the council approved it despite siding with the objection to start with.

I am really at a loss at what to do as there has been a refusal of communication from my neighbour, and Boroondara council has told us to take it to VCAT if we are not happy.

I am a busy father of 3 young children, and doing my best for my family, so I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks

Solway Voter Beware

If one analyses the preferences one sees that all the preferences flow to one candidate.

The only independent seems to be Justin McKernan, and he seems to be last on every ones preferences, he is obviously the biggest threat to the other three who all seem to give there number 2 to one candidate.

Justin will need to win on primary if he is to overcome what the labor party have set up in Solway.

Jill Stansfield is supported by the Hawthorn Rowing Club. This should be a concern to any Xavier or Gennazzano Parent as an email has been intercepted about how they do not wish to share the rowing site.

Did Solway Voters have a choise?

Looks like Solway voters have had the decision made for them by Bob Stensholt and his local Labor party branch with several card carrying members, looks like 3 out of the 4, all cross preferencing each other. They must be claiming victory for Dr Chow already.

The questions are has the Solway voter had the decision made for them? Have they been denied their natural justice? or human rights?

Stensholt must resign

I read with interest a letter from Bob Stensholt MP for Burwood about his so-called efforts to support Glen Iris residents on freeway noise. It is a “Yes Minister” letter and he should drop the pretence. The way I read it, he has agreed to let Vic Roads do exactly what they wanted to do anyway. No wonder NAAG say his letter is disingenuous. The community has spoken. 63dB is the maximum they will accept. Mr Stensholt should genuinely stand up for his community or resign immediately.

Can a government or council rep. please come and see for themselves, how dysfunctional Camberwell has become. The "Well" has created more traffic and the facility has added no value to the area. Keep away from Camberwell Station. There should be NO highrise development, in this area. Sensitive lowrise would be acceptable so take advice from people who live and work here and don't OVERDEVELOP. Let's try and keep beautiful areas beautiful.

The new Residential zones should protect our residential areas from opportunistic and inappropriate development. Hopefully that will mean fewer objections and no appeals to VCAT.
We may have to wait until the zones have been tested over time to see if the protection works well but we expect they will.
